Brief Overview:
Head Start programs promote school readiness of children ages birth to five from low-income families by supporting the development of the whole child. Luzerne County Head Start, Inc. (LCHS) is an income-based early childhood education program that provides comprehensive services to pregnant women, children birth to age five and their families in Luzerne and Wyoming Counties.

LCHS began operations in 1965 and provided Head Start services to approximately 90 children and families. In 1999, LCHS began its Early Head Start program. Today, LCHS serves more than 1,000 children in our Head Start, Pre-K Counts, and Early Head Start programs.

Job Responsibilities:
In accordance with curriculum philosophy, develop appropriate lesson plans based on children’s abilities and interests. Plan and implement educational activities to include managing the classroom and planning activities according to the curriculum that are developmentally appropriate. Evaluate and record children’s progress and communicate with parents on a regular basis. Provide and maintain an atmosphere in the classroom that promotes school readiness and developmentally appropriate practices.

Qualifications:

AA Degree in Early Childhood Education
BS Degree in Early Childhood Education with PA Certification in PK-4 Instructional I Preferred (Required for PreK Counts classroom assignments)
Bilingual Abilities Preferred (Eng/Spanish) – 5% additional pay

Terms/Conditions of Employment
Luzerne County Head Start requires staff possess current, valid Background Clearances (3) per state/federal regulations. Proof of Degree/Certification and Experience Required to meet the qualifications for the position.
